Numinous Landscapes

Paysages Numineux

"Numinous Landscapes", a collection of twelve fine art prints, invites viewers into a world where the familiar meets the transcendent. Rooted in the natural beauty of deserts, these photographs blend realism with subtle abstractions to evoke a sense of the numinous—that mysterious, awe-inspiring presence that hints at something beyond the ordinary.

For a few moments as a teenager walking alone in the woods, I once felt a benevolent presence watching me, filling me with warmth and a sense of being cared for. This experience, later understood through Carl Jung’s writings as an encounter with the spiritual, shapes my fascination with landscapes and their ability to stir a feeling of deeper connection with the natural world.

The work starts with landscapes anchored in realism, capturing recognizable forms—stone formations, trees, and earth textures. This grounds the viewer in the familiar. Then I introduce abstract elements to evoke that same sense of mystery and wonder.

I exaggerate the saturation of complementary colors, replacing drab, low-contrast tones with warm, inviting ones to create surfaces that glow with life, as if breathing under the sun’s gaze. I also selectively invert colors, juxtaposing them with natural hues. Subtle rectangular light effects act as windows, sometimes tinted with their own hues, that guide the eye to specific details and suggest depth beyond the surface. These interventions create visual puzzles designed to entice viewers to question what’s real and what’s imagined, and to stir their own dreams or half-remembered memories.

These subtle changes act as visual speed bumps, slowing the viewer’s processing and fostering a personal dialogue with the image. My hope is that these puzzles help create shared meaning and build a bridge between the tangible and the abstract, suggesting that this deeper, mysterious quality is not a distant ideal but lives in everyday settings.

Ultimately, "Numinous Landscapes" honors nature’s treasures, reminding us that the sacred waits in the interplay of light, form, and emotion, ready to awaken something deep within us.
